Loving Memory
WILLIAM BURNE,
BORN 22ND MARCH 1858
PASSED AWAY 19TH SEPTEMBER 1937
“I believe in God and his mercy”
AND HIS DAUGHTER
LUCY ISABELLA ATCHERLEY
BORN 17TH MARCH 1884,
PASSED AWAY 21ST MARCH 1956

As you can see from the monumental inscription above, Lucy Isabella Burne was born in 1884 and passed away in 1956. Veonna Burne, in her family tree at Ancestry, states that Lucy was born, and died, in Durban, Natal, South Africa where her father William was an advocate (from 1880 until 1935) and also a town councillor (from 1886 to 1891 and again from 1898 to 1904). Veonna also states that Lucy’s mother was Lucy Mary Spring (1862 – 1929), who William had married on 28 Jun 1881.

Lucy married Roger Oliver Bellville Atcherley on 21 March 1914 at Lower Umgeni, Durban. I do not know how long the marriage lasted, but her deceased estate file in the Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository, indexed in an online database at the National Archives of South Africa website, states that Lucy Isabella Burne (nee Atcherley) was a divorcee when she died.
