Dickin family tree

Bookmark and Share

There are three links between the Dickin and Atcherley families. Sarah Atcherley, daughter of Roger Atcherley and Dorothy Spencer, married Thomas Dickin in 1746. Thomas and Sarah’s granddaughter Louisa Dickin married Francis Topping Atcherley in 1872. And before either of these events Hannah Griffiths, daughter of Griffith Griffiths and Frances Atcherley, married John Dickin in 1733.

The union between Thomas Dickin and Sarah Atcherley (also known as Sarah Acherley) produced three descendants who bore Atcherley or Acherley as a ‘middle name’: their grandsons Thomas Atcherley Massy Dickin and William Acherley Parkes Dickin, and their great grandson William Atcherley Tetlow. All three can be found in the Dickin family tree (and its offshoots) below. In addition, a great grandnephew of Thomas Dickin and Jane Massy was named Godfrey Atcherley Peel Massy. Four generations of the Massy family tree are included below to show the relationships between that family and the Dickins. Watch out for several intermarriages between the descendants of Thomas Dickin and Sarah Atcherley and their cousins.

The beginnings of the Dickin family of Loppington and Wem in Shropshire are summarised in Burke’s Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland: “NICHOLAS DICKIN, of Loppington, co. Salop, Gent., d. in 1685, leaving by Anne, his wife, who was buried at Loppington, in 1662, a son, JOHN DICKIN, b. 14 Nov. 1659, who was interred at Loppington, 15 April, 1698, leaving a son, THOMAS DICKIN, of Loppington, Gent., who m. twice; by his first wife, Jane, he had a son, John, who d. in 1702, and by his second, Sarah, he had another son, THOMAS DICKIN, of Loppington, who d. in 1729, leaving, by Sarah, his wife, two sons …”

Unless otherwise stated, all places named below are in Shropshire, England and those places outside Shropshire are in England or Wales.
