… and his descendants

Henry Atcherley was born out of wedlock, so although he was descended from a long line of farmers he grew up to become an agricultural labourer. Henry’s descendants gradually moved away from Shropshire, mainly into Staffordshire to begin with, and also Birmingham (then in Warwickshire). In addition one of his grandsons, Samuel Atcherley, established a branch of this family in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

1st generation

Henry Atcherley. Baptised 12 Aug 1822 at Hinstock. Agricultural labourer. Census: 1841 – Ercall Magna; 1851 – not known; 1861, 1871, 1881 – Kinnersley. Died 9 Jan 1886 at Sidney, Kinnersley in Shropshire. ^Parents

Spouse: Mary Jones. Born at Admaston in the parish of Wrockwardine. Baptised at Wrockwardine 27 Jul 1828. Married 6 May 1847 at Eyton on the Wild Moors. Census: 1861, 1871, 1881 – with husband; 1891 – Kinnersley; 1901 – Newport. Died 7 Feb 1902 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Mary and William Palin, in Knutton, Silverdale Staffordshire. Children:

  • Elizabeth Atcherley. Born 1848 at Eyton on the Wild Moors and baptised there 13 Aug 1848. Census: 1851 – not known; 1861 – Wrockwardine (curiously, as a servant in the household of her relation Thomas Atcherley). Married Frederick Griffiths (born at Allscott in the parish of Wrockwardine 1845, and baptised 12 Oct 1845 at Wrockwardine) 1870 in Shropshire. Elizabeth died 1888 in Shropshire. Frederick drowned in a canal in 1908 and was buried 17 Feb 1908 at Newport. The couple had eight children, most of whom were born in Newport.
  • Mary Atcherley. Born 1850 at Eyton on the Wild Moors and baptised there 14 Jul 1850. Census: 1851 – not known; 1861 – with parents; 1871 – Cherrington. Married William Palin (born 1850 at Tibberton, and baptised there 2 Jun 1850) 1873 in Shropshire. Mary died 1911 in Staffordshire (probably at the Wolstanton And Burslem Union Workhouse) and William died in Staffordshire in 1920. The couple had seven children, born in Shropshire and Staffordshire, one of whom (Henry Palin) died 19 Sep 1915 in Egypt during World War 1.
  • Sarah Atcherley. Born about 1853 at Eyton on the Wild Moors and baptised there 27 Feb 1853. Census: 1861 – with parents. 1871 – Edgmond. Married George Pye (born 1847 at Tibberton, and baptised there 5 Jul 1847) 1876 in Shropshire. George died about 1926 in Shropshire and Sarah died there in 1930. The couple had three children born at Tibberton and another seven children born at Wrockwardine Wood.
  • John Atcherley. Born 1855 at Eyton on the Wild Moors and baptised there 30 Sep 1855. Agricultural labourer, ordinary labourer, and waggoner. Census: 1861 – with parents; 1871 – Wrockwardine Bank, Wrockwardine; 1881 – with parents; 1891, 1901 – with mother; 1911 – Kinnersley. Died about 1927 in Shropshire.
  • Thomas Atcherley. Born at Tern in the parish of Ercall Magna. Baptised at Ercall Magna 18 Oct 1857. Died, probably at Tern, in Feb 1858, aged 4 months. Buried at Ercall Magna 23 Feb 1858.
  • Robert Atcherley. Born at Kinnersley 1859, baptised there 14 Aug 1859, and buried there less than five months later on 3 Jan 1860.

  • Emma Atcherley. Born 23 Jun 1865 at Sidney in the parish of Kinnersley. Baptised at Kinnersley 16 Jul 1865. Census: 1871 – with parents; 1881 – Wrockwardine. Married Edward Steventon (born 1862 at Edgmond) 1885 in Shropshire. The couple had two children (John Steventon and Edward Henry Steventon) at Stoke upon Tern before Edward’s death about 1897 in Shropshire. Emma then married William Albert Herbert Thomas (born 13 Jun 1873 at Guilsfield, Montgomeryshire) on 27 May 1901 at Newport. Emma died about 1930 in Shropshire. William died 7 Aug 1945 at Wellington. The couple had two sons: Herbert Atcherley Thomas and Thomas Charles Thomas.
  • Fanny Atcherley. Born 1868 at Sidney in the parish of Kinnersley. Baptised 24 Jan 1869 at Kinnersley. Census: 1871 – with parents; 1881 – Preston upon the Wild Moors; 1891, 1901 – Gnosall, Staffordshire. Married Albert Edward Challenor (born 1879 at Compton, Tettenhall, Staffordshire) 12 Mar 1910 at Adbaston, Staffordshire. This was Albert’s second marriage. Fanny died 1949 in Staffordshire and Albert died there in 1962. The couple had two children, both born in the parish of Adbaston.
  • Richard Atcherley. Born 1871 at Sidney in the parish of Kinnersley. Baptised 4 Jun 1871 at Kinnersley. Census: 1881 – with parents; 1891 – Norbury, Staffordshire (with his future wife); 1901 – Audmore, Gnosall, Staffordshire; 1911 – Chase Terrace, Burntwood, Staffordshire. Married Hannah Green (born 1866 at Outlands in the parish of Adbaston, Staffordshire and baptised 7 Oct 1866 at Adbaston, Staffordshire) 3 Apr 1894 at Adbaston, Staffordshire. The couple had no children but the 1911 census shows them with an adopted child, John Thomas Fowell. Richard was buried 10 Mar 1938 at Chasetown, Hammerwich, having remained a resident of Chase Terrace until his death. Hannah then married widower Charles Benjamin Dunnicliffe on 16 Apr 1941 at Chasetown, Hammerwich, Staffordshire, shortly before both died (Hannah on 28 Jun 1941 at the General Hospital in Walsall, Staffordshire and Charles on 30 Jul 1941 at the same place). Hannah was buried in the same grave as her first husband on 3 Jul 1941.

Spouse: Hannah Teece. Born 1862 at Ercall Magna. No record of baptism found. Married about 1882 in Shropshire. Census: 1881 – Kinnersley (with future husband); 1891, 1901, 1911 – with husband. Died 1951 in Staffordshire. Children:

  • Jane Atcherley. Born 1882 at Kinnersley, and baptised there 23 Jul 1882. Census: 1891 – with parents; 1901 – Wistanwick, Stoke Upon Tern; 1911 – Wellington. Married Charles Tribe (born about 1887 at Kings Heath, Worcestershire) 11 Jul 1914 at Kings Heath, Worcestershire. The couple had two children (Wilfred Marshall Tribe, 1915-2000, and Henry Albert C Tribe, 1919-1994) before Charles died 1920 in Birmingham, Warwickshire. Following Charles’s death, Jane married George Henry Tyler in 1929 in Birmingham. George died 2 Feb 1946 in Birmingham, and Jane died there in 1958.

Married George Ernest Nagington (born 1886 at Knighton, Adbaston, and baptised 6 Jun 1886 at Adbaston) 10 Jul 1915 at High Offley, Staffordshire. George died 1956 in Staffordshire, and Mary died there in 1958. The couple had five children.

  • George Atcherley. Born 1896 at Childs Ercall, baptised there 4 Oct 1896 and died there 16 Jun 1898. A Coroner’s Inquisition held on 17 Jun 1898 at the Atcherley family’s home concluded that George “in a natural way and not by any means of violence did die.”

Samuel Atcherley. Born 1863 at Sidney in the parish of Kinnersley. Baptised 19 Apr 1863 at Kinnersley. Agricultural labourer, ironmonger’s carter, cowman. Census: 1871, 1881 – with parents; 1891 – Sidney, Kinnerley; 1901 – Newport; 1911 – Flashbrook, Adbaston, Staffordshire. Samuel died at the Newport Workhouse Infirmary and was buried 26 Jun 1914 at Newport Cemetery. ^Parents

Spouse 1: Mary Austin. Born about 1868 at Ellerdine in the parish of Ercall Magna. Census: 1891 – with husband. Died 1897, possibly at Islington in the parish of Forton, Staffordshire, or just over the county border in Newport, Shropshire. Children:

  • Henry Atcherley. Known as Harry. Born 1891 at Sidney in the parish of Kinnersley. Baptised 10 May 1891 at Kinnersley. Census: 1901 – Hoo, Preston on the Weald Moors; 1911 – Wellington. Married Dorothy Louisa Hurdley (born 21 Mar 1897 at Wrockwardine Wood in the parish of Wrockwardine) 1918 in Shropshire. Henry died 8 Jun 1953 in Shropshire and was buried at Wrockwardine Wood. Dorothy died in 1984 (death registered at Oswestry, so the death could have occurred in Shropshire or Wales). The couple had no children.
  • Fanny Atcherley. Born 1893 at Wappenshall in the parish of Eyton on the Weald Moors. Baptised 29 Oct 1893 at Eyton. Census: 1901 – with parents; 1911 – Newport. Married Richard Henry Sylvester (known as Harry; born 13 Feb 1894 at Eccleshall, Staffordshire) on 21 Apr 1919 at Chasetown, Burntwood, Staffordshire. The couple had two children: Nancy G Sylvester (1921-1939) and Frank Raymond Sylvester (1923-1995). Fanny died 20 Jul 1951 in Staffordshire. Richard then married Christine Rose Mariani (nee Witcher, born 28 Apr 1898 at Winchester, Hampshire and married to Oreste P Mariani in 1916) on 7 Feb 1953 at Chasetown, Hammerwich, Staffordshire. Richard died 1970 at Walsall, Staffordshire, not long after Christine passed away there.
  • John Atcherley. Known as Jack. Born 1896 at Islington in the parish of Forton, Staffordshire. Baptised 27 Dec 1896 at Forton, Staffordshire. Census: 1901, 1911 – with parents. Married Margaret Trevor (born 27 Sep 1909 at Norbury, Staffordshire) 5 Aug 1930 at Chasetown, Hammerwich, Staffordshire. John and Margaret lived in neighbouring Chase Terrace, Buntwood, Staffordshire. John died 1961 in Staffordshire, and Margaret died there in 1996. The couple had no children.

Spouse 2: Jessie Thacker. Born 1869 at Offley Grove, High Offley, Staffordshire. Baptised 22 Aug 1869 at High Offley and married there 6 Mar 1905. Census: 1911 – with husband. After Samuel’s death Jessie lived in a “one up, one down” cottage at Shebdon, High Offley, Staffordshire, until her death in 1947. She was buried at High Offley, Staffordshire. Children:

  • Male Atcherley (twin). Born 6 Apr 1907 at Shebdon, High Offley, Staffordshire but died shortly afterwards before he could be named.
  • Richard Atcherley (twin). Born 6 Apr 1907 at Shebdon, High Offley, Staffordshire. Baptised privately at High Offley, Staffordshire on 21 Apr 1907. Died 1 May 1907, aged 3 weeks, at Shebdon, High Offley, Staffordshire from malnutrition following premature birth.

Fred died in Shropshire in 1985; Phyllis died at Cold Hatton Heath, Ercall Magna on 22 Feb 2012, aged 101. The couple had no children.
  • Doris Kate Atcherley. Born 4 May 1915 in Shropshire. Married Ernest Joseph Arkinstall (born about 29 Nov 1907 at Newport) 12 Dec 1936 at Tibberton and lived there with him from at least 1945 to 1973. Ernest died 24 Jan 1986 in Shropshire, and Doris died there 10 Sep 1998. The couple had two children.
  • Cyril G L Atcherley. Born 1918 in Shropshire, and died there 1920, aged 1.
  • Reginald John Atcherley. Born 3 Jun 1921 in Shropshire, probably at Tibberton, where it appears Reg lived his whole life. He joined the forces in World War 2, and in civilian life worked for the local coalman. With his brother Bill, Reg was a regular at Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms. Reg died in Shropshire about 2000.

Spouse: Annie Lainton. Born 13 Sep 1896 at Outlands in the parish of Adbaston, Staffordshire. Married 5 Apr 1920 at Croxton, Staffordshire. Died 1989 in Shropshire. Daughter:

  • Frances Annie Atcherley. Born 16 Apr 1922 in Shropshire. Annie married William Thomas Sylvester (born 18 Oct 1909 at Knightley, Eccleshall, Staffordshire) in 1938 in Shropshire. The couple had a daughter, Mary Silvester, who was born 1938, probably at Tibberton, and died from pneumonia aged 11 years and 6 months, on 22 Feb 1950 in Shropshire. Mary was buried at Tibberton. Frances died in Shropshire in 1994, and William Thomas Sylvester died there a little under two years later in 1996.

Herbert Russell Atcherley. Born 21 Mar 1905 at Shebdon, High Offley, Staffordshire. Census: 1911 – Shebdon, High Offley, Staffordshire. A labourer. Lived at Chase Terrace with wife Beatrice; was sharing a house there with his parents in 1945. Died 1977 in Staffordshire. ^Parents

Spouse: Beatrice Alice Challoner. Born 26 Feb 1902 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, daughter of Albert Edward Challoner by his first wife and stepdaughter of Fanny Atcherley, who was not only Albert’s second wife but also Herbert Atcherley’s aunt. Married 18 Feb 1928 at Chasetown, Hammerwich, Staffordshire. Died 1987 in Staffordshire. Children:

Fred Atcherley. Born 22 Dec 1908 at Flashbrook in the parish of Adbaston, Staffordshire. Baptised 7 Feb 1909 at Adbaston, Staffordshire. Census: 1911 – with parents. Grew up at Shebdon in the parish of High Offley, Staffordshire and was working as a baker when he married. Later moved to Avenue Lodge near Batchacre Hall and worked as a farm labourer. Then took a job as a factory labourer with Audley Engineering in Newport, Shropshire and moved to Newport around 1950. Died 1970 at Newport. ^Parents

Spouse: Louisa Hall. Born 23 Apr 1911 at Outwoods in the parish of Gnosall, Staffordshire. Baptised 14 May 1911 at Moreton, Gnosall, Staffordshire. Married 5 Jan 1935 at Longford, at which time the Hall family was living at Longford Mill, Lonford, Shropshire. Died 1961 in Staffordshire. Daughter:

  • Elizabeth Mary Atcherley. Known as Betty. Born 6 Jan 1937 at Newport, Shropshire and spent her early years at Shebdon, High Offley, Staffordshire before moving to Newport, Shropshire with her parents. Married, and had three children, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren before she passed away on 22 Feb 2013.

William Arthur Atcherley. Known as Bill. Born 28 Dec 1909 at Cherrington. Census: 1911 – Cherrington. Appears to have lived all his adult life at Tibberton. Died 1979 in Shropshire. ^Parents

    This Is Really Good Im The Great Granddaughter Of James Henry Atcherley. But There Is Only One Boy Left In Pembroke With The Atcherley Name An Hes Gone On To Have 2 Girls Hopefully He Will Have A Boy To Keep The Name Going Down This End
