Thomas of Twyford…

… and his descendants

Originally I believed that the Thomas Atcherley at the head of this branch was a son of Richard Atcherley of Stanwardine. However it is now clear that he was Thomas Atcherley alias Edge, the illegitimate son of Thomas Atcherley of Marton in the parish if Myddle. While the main Marton line which was descended from Thomas of Marton eventually became extinct, the branch started by his illegitimate son returned to the ancestral home of the Atcherley family at Stanwardine and has survived to the present day.

Unless otherwise stated, all places below are in Shropshire, England and those places outside Shropshire are in England or Wales.

  1. Ronni says:

Thank you so much! So the Atcherly who married John Jebb was my grandmother’s mother? Do I have that right? With all sides of my family, the information I have is very sketchy…I was told that Granny and her two sisters were known as The Three Belles of Brecon, but never knew if she had brothers. She married Guy John Dobell in (I think) 1901, though I was told 1900, and they had four children, Enid, who married Eric Smith and lived in Oxford, Joan, who married Chase Green-Price and lived in Devon, my dad, Guy John Faulkner who, as you know, married Dorothy Ethel Fetterly, and Zoë, who never married. My dad remarried after Mom’s death in 1977, and my stepmother is Joan Punnett Dobell, who still lives in Victora, B. C.

  2. Steve says:

Hi Ronni, Martha Atcherley was your grandmother’s grandmother. She and John Jebb had a son named John Atcherley Jebb (baptised 15 Jan 1837 at Hordley in Shropshire, died 11 Feb 1915 in Wales), who on 13 Apr 1877 (at Lewisham, Middlesex) married Mary Henshaw (born about 1855 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, died 11 Apr 1935 in Breconshire). Their three daughters were your grandmother, Marion Elsie Jebb, and grandaunts Mary Gladys Jebb and Dorothy Atcherley Jebb. There were also two sons, John Atcherley Jebb and Frank Atcherley Jebb, both of whom died in infancy. You are right about the year of Marion’s marriage to Guy Dobell, this was registered in the second quarter of 1901.

Guy Dobell’s father was Cyrus Faulker Dobell of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire (born 1838, died 18 May 1920), and the father of Cyrus was John Dobell, a wine merchant (born about 1798 in Cranbrook, Kent, died 29 Jun 1878 in Cheltenham).
