… and his descendants

This part of the Atcherley family’s Baschurch branch ran for five generations before it ended, in 1997, with the death of Jean Marion Atcherley in Canada. I tend to think of this line as the “Cureton Atcherleys” as all but the last generation included a Thomas Cureton Atcherley; the line also featured two daughters named Mary Cureton Atcherley, one named Alice Bell Cureton Atcherley, and a son named Charles Cureton Atcherley.

Unless otherwise stated, all places named below are in Shropshire, England and those places outside Shropshire are in England or Wales.

Delighted to find your site. I am interested because I am descended from Margaret Minton nee Matthews, a younger sister of Mary Matthews (1809 – 1892). I have done quite alot of research on that Matthews family, so can give you some background to Mary if you wish. I have a copy of a letter written by a grand-daughter of Margaret from Australia in 1938 where it appears she refers to Stephen Atcherley and money he provided in his Will to three of his older sisters.
    Great site. So well done.

Many thanks for your kind comments Clive, I’m glad you like what you’ve found here! I would be very interested to learn more about Mary Matthews and will e-mail you about this. I have her father as Stephen Matthews, born at Grafton in the parish of Fitz in Shropshire and baptised at Fitz on 10 Jan 1780; a Gentleman farmer who died 6 Dec 1861 at Ruyton-XI-Towns, leaving effects valued at under £3,000. Mary’s mother I have as Priscilla Gittins, born at Montford and baptised there on 7 Nov 1779; married Stephen there on 9 Apr 1801 and died in Shropshire in 1864. It is interesting that Mary Matthews’ daughter Priscilla Atcherley married a Matthews (William Matthews, baptised 24 Sep 1809 at Upton Magna), although I don’t have any evidence of a connection between William and Mary.
