Brompton Cemetery

Eliza Maria Winter was born on 5 February 1848 in St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex, and was baptised there on 27 February that year. She was the daughter of German immigrant Frederick Ludwig Winter, a tailor, and his wife Johanna (Weber), who lived at 7 Goodwin’s Court until the 1870s when the family moved to 2 Bentinck Street.
Eliza married William Baugh Atcherley at Portman Square in London on 6 November 1880. More information and a photo of William and Eliza can be found on the following page in the Pictures section of this website: William Baugh Atcherley and Eliza (Winter).
Eliza died in 1884 at the age of 36 and was buried with her mother. Her father and her brother joined her in the family plot in 1893 and 1902 respectively. The inscription on their gravestone reads:
JOHANNA
THE BELOVED WIFE OF
FREDERICK WINTER.
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
JANUARY 20TH 1871,
IN THE 60TH YEAR OF HER AGE.
LOVED BY HER FAMILY, AND DEEPLY
LAMENTED BY ALL WHO KNEW HER.
BELOVED ONE OH HEAVENLY SAINT,
MAY WE LIKE THEE BE BLESSED,
IN LIFE BE FAITHFULL,
AND IN DEATH FIND REST.
ALSO
IN SACRED MEMORY OF
ELIZA MARIA ATCHERLEY,
THE DEARLY LOVED WIFE OF
W. B. ATCHERLEY,
AND DAUGHTER OF THE ABOVE:
WHO DIED ON OCTOBER 19TH 1884,
AGED 36 YEARS.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF ONE MOST
DEEPLY MOURNED BY ALL.
ALSO
FREDERICK LUDWIG,
THE DEARLY LOVED FATHER AND HUSBAND OF THE ABOVE
DIED MAY 3RD 1893, AGED 86.
TO LIVE IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WE LEAVE

FRED ONLY SON OF LUDWIG AND JOHANNA WINTER,

WHO FELL ASLEEP ON HIS 32ND BIRTHDAY MAY 12TH 1902
