This part of the Atcherley family’s Baschurch branch ran for five generations before it ended, in 1997, with the death of Jean Marion Atcherley in Canada. I tend to think of this line as the “Cureton Atcherleys” as all but the last generation included a Thomas Cureton Atcherley; the line also featured two daughters named Mary Cureton Atcherley, one named Alice Bell Cureton Atcherley, and a son named Charles Cureton Atcherley.
Unless otherwise stated, all places named below are in Shropshire, England and those places outside Shropshire are in England or Wales.
[Top] William of Shrewsbury, 1st generation
William Atcherley. Born at Stanwardine in the Fields, in the parish of Baschurch. Baptised 18 Aug 1778 at Baschurch. An ironmonger in Shrewsbury from around 1800 to 1826. Census: 1841 – Shrewsbury. Died 16 Oct 1850 at Shrewsbury. Buried 22 Oct 1850 at Baschurch. ^Parents
Spouse: Mary Cureton. Born at Hordley, baptised there 2 Apr 1780 (daughter of Thomas Cureton and his wife Mary Cureton), and married there 4 Aug 1800. Died 4 Oct 1810. Buried 8 Oct 1810 at Baschurch. Children:
- Bell Atcherley. Born 27 May 1802 at Shrewsbury, and baptised there (at St Chad) 1 Jan 1803. Married grocer Benjamin Jones (born at Pontesbury and baptised there 10 Nov 1793) at Shrewsbury St Chad on 7 Aug 1823. Benjamin was buried 15 Nov 1834 at Shrewsbury St Chad, aged 41. Bell died 6 Apr 1873 at Shrewsbury and was buried 10 Apr 1873 at Baschurch. The couple had two children, William Atcherley Jones and Mary Jones.
- Thomas Cureton Atcherley (the 1st). Born 13 Oct 1804 at Shrewsbury, and baptised there (at St Chad) 17 Jun 1805. 2nd generation >>
- William Atcherley. Born 13 Dec 1805 at Shrewsbury, and baptised there (at St Chad) 15 Sep 1806. Died 19 Feb 1830. Buried 25 Feb 1830 at Baschurch.
- John Atcherley. Born 9 May 1807 at Shrewsbury, and baptised there (at St Chad) 15 Sep 1807. A trainee silk mercer in 1841. Census: 1841 – Westminster, Middlesex; 1851 – Woolwich, Kent. Died at Shrewsbury and was buried 26 Mar 1855 at Baschurch.
- Mary Cureton Atcherley. Born 17 Dec 1808 at Shrewsbury. Census: 1841 – with father; 1851 – Pontesbury; 1861, 1871 – Chorlton, Lancashire; 1881 – Withington, Lancashire. Died in Lancashire and was buried 29 Jan 1883 at Withington, Lancashire.
- Hannah Atcherley. Born about July 1810 at Shrewsbury. Died 24 Feb 1811, aged 7 months. Buried at Baschurch 26 Feb 1811 (her name being entered in the register as Mary Atcherley, although it was inscribed as Hannah on the family tomb).

Thomas Cureton Atcherley (the 1st). Born 13 Oct 1804 at Shrewsbury, and baptised there (at St Chad) 17 Jun 1805. A farmer, also a grocer. Census: 1841 – Westbury; 1851 – Ford; 1861 – Wolverhampton, Staffordshire; 1871 – Little Ness. Living at Milford, Little Ness at the time of his death on 5 Sep 1874 in Shropshire. Buried 10 Sep 1874 at Baschurch. ^Parents
Spouse: Mary Matthews. Born at Isle Park, Bicton and baptised 13 Aug 1809 at Fitz, daughter of Stephen Matthews and his wife Priscilla (Gittins). Married 14 Jun 1827 at Montford. Census: 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 – with husband; 1881 – Paddington, Middlesex; 1891 – Ealing, Middlesex. Died 2 Oct 1892 in Middlesex. Buried 7 Oct 1892 at Perivale, Middlesex. Children:
- Mary Cureton Atcherley. Born at Astley Abbots, and baptised there 25 May 1828. Also baptised 18 May 1831 at Shrewsbury. A private teacher during the 1860s and early 1870s. Census: 1841 – Shrewsbury; 1851 – Pontesbury; 1861 – Chorlton, Lancashire; 1871, 1881, 1891 – with mother; 1901 – Brentford, Middlesex. Died 5 Feb 1904 in Middlesex.
- Anne Atcherley. Born at Astley Abbots, and baptised there 14 Jun 1829. Also baptised 18 May 1831 at Shrewsbury. Census: 1841 – Atcham; 1851 – with parents. Died 13 Nov 1852 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Buried 18 Nov 1852 at Baschurch, aged 23.
- Eliza Atcherley. Born at Shrewsbury, and baptised there (at St Chad) 18 May 1831. For at least 25 years prior to her death she lived with James Proffitt, a grocer and later a commercial traveller. Census: 1841 – Atcham; 1851 – Tern, Ercall Magna; 1861 – with parents; 1871 – Birmingham, Warwickshire; 1881, 1891 – Aston, Warwickshire. Died 2 Sep 1896 at Leamington, Warwickshire.
- Margaret Bell Atcherley. Born 13 Apr 1833 at Westbury. Baptised 16 Jun 1835 at Shrewsbury (St Chad). Census: 1841, 1851 – with parents; 1861 – Gnosall, Staffordshire; 1871 – Coleshill, Warwickshire; 1881, 1891 – with mother; 1901 – Brentford, Middlesex. Died 12 Oct 1909 in Middlesex. Buried 15 Oct 1909 at Perivale, Middlesex.
- William Atcherley. Born 1 Mar 1835 at Westbury. Baptised 16 Jun 1835 at Shrewsbury (St Chad). Apprentice to a grocer. Census: 1841 – with parents; 1851 – Wellington. Died, aged 20, on 25 Jun 1855 at Oxley, Bushbury, Staffordshire.

- Priscilla Atcherley. Born at Hurst, Westbury. Baptised 26 Apr 1840 at Westbury. Census: 1841 – not found; 1851 – with parents; 1861 – Albrighton, Pimhill. Married her first cousin once removed, widower William Matthews (born at Preston Boats in the parish of Upton Magna, and baptised at Upton Magna 24 Sep 1809) on 10 Jan 1865 at Leamington, Warwickshire. William died 1892 in Worcestershire, and Priscilla died 26 Feb 1924 in Warwickshire. The couple had seven children: Priscilla Cureton Matthews, Mary Margaret Matthews, John Atcherley Matthews, Eliza Atcherley Matthews, Charles Atcherley Matthews, Atcherley Matthews and May Atcherley Matthews. The first girl and the three boys all died in infancy.
- John Roger Atcherley. Born 8 Aug 1842 at Hurst, Westbury. Baptised 18 Sep 1842 at Westbury. A hardware merchant’s clerk, then a railway clerk, and finally a railway accountant. Married Mary Carruthers Miller (born 8 Apr 1842 at Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland and baptised there 30 May 1842) 1887 in Lancashire. Census: 1851, 1861 – with parents; 1871, 1881 – Paddington, Middlesex; 1891 – Ealing, Middlesex. John died 7 Mar 1894 at Ealing, Middlesex and was buried 12 Mar 1894 at Perivale, Middlesex. Mary (1901 and 1911 census: Ealing, Middlesex) died 2 Aug 1917 in Middlesex, and was buried 4 Aug 1917 at Perivale, Middlesex. The couple had no children.
- Edward Cureton Atcherley. Born at Hurst, Westbury. Baptised 21 Apr 1844 at Westbury. Census: 1851 – with parents; 1861 – Chorlton, Lancashire. Died 28 Jun 1862, aged 18, at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.
- Charles Cureton Atcherley. Born 23 Oct 1846 at Hurst, Westbury. Baptised 22 Jul 1847 at Shrewsbury (at St George’s Chapel, parish of St Chad). Census: 1851, 1861 – with parents. Emigrated to USA, arriving 27 Aug 1870 at New York. Presumably returned to the UK, before going back to the USA; arriving 23 Aug 1875 at New York. Occupation given as labourer on both passenger lists, but established himself as a butcher in America. USA census: 1880 – Paris, Lamar, Texas, USA. Married Magnolia Amelia Willey (known as Maggie) on 18 Nov 1880 in Harrison County, Texas, USA. The couple had no children. Charles died 27 Nov 1884 at Paris, Lamar, Texas, USA. Maggie then married Robert Lee Moye on 25 Jul 1894 in Lamar County, Texas, USA.

Thomas Cureton Atcherley (the 2nd). Born 22 Jan 1837 at Shrewsbury, and baptised there (at St George’s Chapel, parish of St Chad) 19 Mar 1837. A cattle dealer. Census: 1841, 1851 – with parents. Died 6 Nov 1859 at Pentre-clawdd, Selattyn, aged 22. Buried 11 Nov 1859 at Oswestry. ^Parents

(Nearly 15 months after she was widowed, and on the day when she was enumerated as Sarah Atcherley for the 1861 census (8 Apr 1861), Thomas Cureton Atcherley’s widow Sarah married Thomas Nurse (born at Lydbury North, and baptised there 3 Jul 1836) at Hengoed, Selattyn. This couple had nine children.)

Stephen Atcherley. Born about Jan 1851 at Ford. Baptised 22 Apr 1851 at Great Ness. Census: 1851, 1861, 1871 – with parents. Emigrated to Australia (presumably in the 1870s), where he became a tea merchant, forming a partnership with Thomas C Dawson (Atcherley and Dawson). Lived at Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia, and then at Bathurst, New South Wales. Will dated 3 Mar 1894. Died 9 Jul 1894 at Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia. Buried at Waverley Cemetery, Bronte, New South Wales, Australia. ^Parents

Married Frank Leslie Haines (born 1885 at Clifton Hill, Victoria, Australia) in 1915 in Victoria, Australia. The couple had four children. Alice died 4 Aug 1969 at Kew, Victoria, Australia, aged 79. Frank died 25 Aug 1966 in Victoria, Australia.

Thomas Cureton Atcherley (the 3rd). Born about 1860 at Pentre-clawdd, Selattyn. A police constable, later promoted to police sergeant; worked as an Inspector for the Walsall Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after his retirement from the police. Census: 1861 – Oswestry; 1871 – with mother (as Thomas Nurse); 1881 – Gwyddelwern, Merionethshire; 1891 – Bloxwich, Staffordshire; 1901, 1911 – Walsall, Staffordshire. Married George Collins (born about 1874 at Kelston, Somerset) in 1908 at Walsall, Staffordshire. The couple had five children: Joyce Collins, Isabel R Collins, Ronald William C Collins, George T Collins, and Decima Collins.
- Thomas Cureton Atcherley (the 4th). Born about 1886 at Gwyddelwern, Merionethshire. Died 1888 at Walsall, Staffordshire, aged 2.

Married Frederick William Howlett Winwood (born 20 May 1893 in Worcestershire) about 1915 in Worcestershire. Florence died about 1970 in Herefordshire, and Frederick died 1972 in Worcestershire. The couple had a son, Paul Frederick Cureton Winwood, born 15 Jun 1915 at Walsall, Staffordshire and died 28 Jan 1994 in Berkshire.
- Lilian Eunice Atcherley. Born 14 Jun 1895 at Walsall, Staffordshire. Census: 1901, 1911 – with parents. Died 26 Sep 1972 in Birmingham, Warwickshire aged 77.

Charles Hedley Atcherley. Born 21 Sep 1889 at Walsall, Staffordshire. Baptised 14 Mar 1894 at Bloxwich, Staffordshire. A grocer, then a ‘Mountie’ and ended his career as Chief of Niagara Parks Police. Census: 1891, 1901 – with parents. Emigrated to Canada, arriving at Montreal, Quebec on 26 Apr 1908. Enumerated twice on the 1911 census of Canada, at Regina, Saskatchewan and Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Alberta. Fought in World War 2, and awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Died 13 Jun 1975 at Hockley Heath, Birmingham, West Midlands. Buried 21 Jun 1975 at Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. ^Parents
