Richard of Stanwardine

Although Richard was the founder of this branch of the Atcherley family, and his son John fathered no less than 17 children, it was Richard’s son Roger, baptised at Baschurch in 1615, who ensured the continuation of the line. While three of John’s sons from his second marriage had children, none of their sons lived long enough to marry. Roger’s son John, on the other hand, had sons who became fathers and grandfathers, and ultimately the forefathers of Atcherleys alive today.

Unless otherwise stated, all places named below are in Shropshire, England and those places outside Shropshire are in England or Wales.

Richard Atcherley. Likely born around 1580 at Stanwardine in the parish of Baschurch. A yeoman (a farmer who cultivated his own land). Died about 1619 (administration of his estate granted to his widow Ellenor on 26 Oct 1619).

John Atcherley. Baptised 16 May 1613 at Baschurch. Apprenticed to a draper in Shrewsbury, 1627. Merchant of the Staple of Calais. Burgess of Shrewsbury from 1636. Churchwarden at Baschurch, 1662/3. Buried 2 Sep 1672 at Baschurch. ^Parents

Spouse 1: Judith Kynaston. Baptised 7 Apr 1613 at Shrewsbury (daughter of Arthur Kynaston), married there on 26 Mar 1635, and buried there on 14 Jun 1654. Children:

  • Thomas Atcherley. Baptised 29 Dec 1635 at Shrewsbury. Apprenticed to Benjamin Edwards, of the Levant Muscovia Company and the Eastland Company, March 1653/4. Not mentioned in his father’s will of 1672 so presumably died before then.
  • John Atcherley. Baptised 22 Dec 1636 at Shrewsbury, and buried there 20 Jun 1642 aged about 5.
  • Samuel Atcherley. Baptised 14 Dec 1637 at Shrewsbury and buried there 18 Jun 1642 aged about 4.
  • Mary Atcherley. Baptised 14 Feb 1638/9 at Shrewsbury and buried there 6 Apr 1660 aged about 21.
  • Francis Atcherley. Baptised 27 Feb 1639/40 at Shrewsbury. A merchant in London, Middlesex when will made on 31 Dec 1666. Probably died 1668/1669 as will proved 21 Sep 1669. Described as being “late in parts beyond the seas” in 1671 when sentence was pronounced on a legal dispute over his will.
  • Judith Atcherley. Baptised 28 Mar 1641 at Shrewsbury. Married a Mr Cox. The couple had one child, Edward, before Judith was widowed. Later (in or after 1690) Judith, then of Barton on Humber, Lincolnshire, married William Gilder, of the same place, Gent., who afterwards assumed the surname Gildas.
  • Arthur Atcherley. Baptised 14 Apr 1642 at Shrewsbury. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland from 1660. Nothing further known.
  • Samuel Atcherley. Baptised 1 Sep 1643 at Shrewsbury, and buried there 21 Oct 1648 aged about 5.
  • Edward Atcherley. Baptised 1 Feb 1644/5 at Shrewsbury. Merchant, then overseer of a Jamaican sugar plantation. Died in or before 1679, “overseas in the ship Robert and Richard.”
  • Abigaile Atcherley. Baptised 5 Jul 1646 at Shrewsbury and buried there eight days later on 13 Jul 1646.
  • John Atcherley. Baptised 11 Feb 1647/8 at Shrewsbury. Not mentioned in his father’s will. Nothing further known.
  • Elizabeth Atcherley. Baptised 20 May 1649 at Shrewsbury. Will dated 29 Aug 1719. Buried 2 Oct 1719 at Acton, Middlesex.
  • Richard Atcherley. Baptised 20 Jan 1650 “at Haughmond” in Uffington parish. Also baptised 15 May 1653 at Shrewsbury. Living in 1672 when named in his father’s will. Nothing further known.

Spouse 2: Mary Spendlove. Baptised 30 Oct 1633 at Wem, daughter of Roger Spendlove and his wife Elizabeth. Likely married about 1660. Living at Stanwardine when will made on 26 Apr 1703. Buried at Baschurch 9 Jun 1703. Children:

  • Roger Atcherley. Baptised 23 Dec 1662 at Baschurch. 3rd generation, family 1 >>
  • Peter Atcherley. Baptised 30 May 1664 at Baschurch. Appears to have been an ensign in Sir Edward Hales’s Regiment of Foot in the 1680s, and then in the 1690s Captain of a regiment of foot commanded by Colonel Edward Lloyd, then of The Queen’s Regiment of Dragoons. Described as a Gent. “of Stanwardine” in 1690 and as “late of the town of Shrewsbury” when his widow Maria (of whom nothing further is known) was granted administration of his estate on 20 Mar 1701/2.

  • Mary Atcherley. Baptised 5 Mar 1671/2 at Baschurch. Married Thomas Atcherley of Wrexham, probably around 1700 but no record this event has been found.

Roger Atcherley. Baptised 22 Sep 1615 at Baschurch. Lived at Coton in the parish Wem, and Stanwardine in the Wood in the parish of Baschurch. Will dated 20 Feb 1661/62. Buried 27 Feb 1661/2 at Baschurch. ^Parents

Spouse: Elizabeth Elsmere. Baptised 19 Feb 1617/8 at Shrewsbury, daughter of Samuel Elsmere. Married there on 4 Apr 1645. After the death of her husband Roger, she lived at Newton near Shrewsbury. Buried 6 May 1692 at Shrewsbury. Children:

  • Elizabeth Atcherley. Born at Coton in the parish of Wem and baptised at Edstaston in that parish on 30 May 1647. Married George Milward on 25 May 1665 at Loppington. The couple had six children there. Elizabeth was buried 3 Jul 1678 at Loppington. George was buried there 17 Jun 1693.
  • John Atcherley. Likely born around 1650, at Coton in the parish of Wem, but no baptism found. In his father Roger’s will of 20 Feb 1661/2 he was to inherit Roger’s lands in Edstaston and Whitchurch when of age. 3rd generation, family 4 >>
  • Roger Atcherley. Born at Coton in the parish of Wem and baptised at Edstaston in that parish on 19 Jun 1653. Died aged 3, buried 30 Mar 1657 at Shrewsbury St Mary.
  • Mary Atcherley. Born 28 Jun 1655 at Stanwardine in the Wood. Baptised 1 Jul 1655 at Baschurch. Married Richard Jones in 1683 at Shrewsbury. The couple had a son, named after his father, born at Tedsmere in the parish of West Felton and baptised in that parish on 22 May 1684. Nothing further known.

Roger Atcherley. Baptised 23 Dec 1662 at Baschurch. A lawyer of the Inner Temple, London, Middlesex, and a constitutional writer. Died 16 Apr 1740 at Greenwich, Kent. Buried 23 Apr 1740 in the Temple Church, London, Middlesex. ^Parents

Spouse: Elizabeth Vernon. Born abt 1659, and baptised 26 Aug 1660, at Hanbury, Worcestershire. Married 6 Feb 1691/2 in London, Middlesex. Died 3 May 1732 and buried  31 May 1732 in the Temple Church, London, Middlesex. Children:

  • Henry Atcherley. Baptised 27 Feb 1694 at Holborn, Middlesex. Buried 13 Feb 1700/1 at Hampstead, Middlesex, aged about 6.
  • Letitia Atcherley. Baptised 26 Jun 1702 in London, Middlesex. Died 10 Feb 1742 at Greenwich, Kent.

Joseph Atcherley. Born at Stanwardine in the Fields, Baschurch. Baptised 29 Jun 1666 at Baschurch. Apprenticed to (Sir) Robert Beachcroft of the Clothworkers’ Company in London, an Alderman and Mayor of the city. Will of “Joseph Acherley Citizen & Clothworker of London” dated 8 Jul 1698 was proved, following Joseph’s death, in Jun 1701. ^Parents

Spouse: Elizabeth Beachcroft, sister of Sir Robert Beachcroft and daughter of Daniel Beachcroft of Derby, Derbyshire. Born about 1666. Married 10 Jun 1690 at Walbrook, London, Middlesex. Children:

  • Mary Atcherley. Baptised 25 Feb 1691/2 in London, Middlesex. Nothing further known.
  • John Atcherley. Baptised 8 Mar 1693/4 in London, Middlesex. Nothing further known.
  • Elizabeth Atcherley. Baptised 31 Dec 1697 at Baschurch, “ye daughter of Mr Joseph Atcherley of London.” Nothing further known.
  • Jane Atcherley. Baptised 27 Feb 1697/8 at Whitechapel, Middlesex. Married John Phillips on 21 Jun 1716 in London, Middlesex. Nothing further known.
  • Martha Atcherley. Baptised 7 Jun 1700 at Whitechapel, Middlesex and buried there 12 Jan 1701/2, aged about 1.

(After the death of Joseph Atcherley, his widow Elizabeth married Elias Collett – who was himself a widower – on 17 Nov 1702 in London, Middlesex. The couple had two children. Elias, a “citizen and cooper of London” when he made his will on 19 Oct 1725, was buried 9 Dec 1725 in London, Middlesex. Elizabeth was buried 25 May 1736 at Stepney, Middlesex.)

Thomas Atcherley. Baptised 3 May 1668 at Baschurch. A mercer, who lived in Shrewsbury but later moved to London. Presumably died in London, but no burial record found. ^Parents

Spouse: Jane Plymley. Baptised 10 Aug 1669 at Shrewsbury, daughter of Richard and Ann. Married Aug 1691 at Baschurch. Buried 7 Dec 1731 at Clerkenwell, Middlesex. Children:

  • John Atcherley. Baptised 29 Sep 1692 at Shrewsbury and buried there the next day.
  • Mary Atcherley. Baptised 10 Apr 1694 at Shrewsbury. Buried 18 Nov 1745 at Clerkenwell, Middlesex aged about 51.
  • Richard Atcherley. Baptised 5 Apr 1696 at Shrewsbury. He was living in London in 1719 but was later lost at sea.
  • Ann Atcherley. Baptised 20 Nov 1698 at Shrewsbury. Married Samuel Davis (born around 1705) at Westminster, Middlesex on 13 Apr 1727. Samuel was buried 4 May 1750 at Clerkenwell, Middlesex. Ann then married widower Joseph Swinscoe (born around 1689) on 9 Oct 1755 at Islington, Middlesex. Joseph was buried 2 Sep 1766 at Holborn, Middlesex. Ann was of Islington, Middlesex when she died, aged about 93, and was buried 7 Apr 1792 at Clerkenwell, Middlesex.

John Atcherley. Likely born around 1650, at Coton in the parish of Wem, but no baptism found. Probably a Gentleman farmer or yeoman. Lived at Newton in the parish of Shrewsbury St Mary, Edgerley in the parish of Kinnerley, and Roden in the parish of Ercall Magna. Buried 29 Jul 1727 at Kinnerley. ^Parents

Spouse: Elizabeth Elsmere. Baptised 25 Jan 1656/7 at Shrewsbury, daughter of Samuel. Married there 14 May 1685. Was of Tilley in the parish of Wem when she made her will on 22 Apr 1721. Buried 21 Oct 1727 at Kinnerley. Children:

  • John Atcherley. Baptised 9 Mar 1685/6 at Shrewsbury. Buried 28 Dec 1706 at Ercall Magna, aged about 20.

  • Mary Atcherley. Baptised 6 Aug 1697 at Kinnerley. A spinster in 1755. May have lived with her brother Richard and his family at Edgerley and was probably the “Mrs. Mary Atcherley, of Edgerley” buried at Kinnerley on 27 Dec 1772.
  • Elizabeth Atcherley. Baptised 7 Feb 1700/1 at Ercall Magna, and buried there the next day.
