1939 National Register of England and Wales
Updated 6 Aug 2016
Bedfordshire | Buckinghamshire | Cheshire | Derbyshire | Essex | Hertfordshire | Lancashire | Pembrokeshire | Shropshire | Staffordshire | Surrey | Warwickshire | Westmorland | Wiltshire | Worcestershire | Yorkshire | Not found | See also: Atcherleys on the eve of World War Two – the 1939 Register.
Below I have given details of the Atcherleys recorded on the 1939 Register, which went online at Findmypast on 2 November 2015.
Due to the tight binding of the registers, and the fact that the pages giving details of wartime services and other information are not shown in full, descriptions of occupations and particularly of wartime activities etc are sometimes truncated. Where this is so, missing words or parts of words are indicated with _____.
The web pages linked to from the borough / district names below are on the excellent Vision of Britain website. The Item number links will take you to a page on the Findmypast website showing all available results for that Item (or page), while the Line links will take you to a results page for the individual person (where, if you have sufficient credits and if you so wish, you can click to ‘unlock’ and view the page of the register on which that person is listed).
Note that for reasons of privacy, details of people on the register who were born less than 100 years ago are redacted, unless one of three circumstances apply. The first of those is that their entry in the register (which was maintained by the NHS until 1991) was updated to show their death. The second is that Findmypast have confirmed their death through an entry in the England and Wales death registration indexes. The third is that a Findmypast user has submitted a copy of a death certificate proving the death of the person concerned.

Nottingham Area telephone directories dating from 1941 to 1947 (probably relating to Margaret Ellen before her marriage to Alan Charles Cunnyngham Perdriau in 1947) show: M E Atcherley, Miss, 20 Mansfield ct, Mansfield rd, Nottm 66527.]

Other residents in this household: George E Trafford, 1882, plus 1 redacted.
[Note: Surname originally transcribed as Atherley. My research indicates that Laura was in fact Laura Bramfoot and that her marital status was single (she had lived with Rowland Hill Atcherley before his death), and the redacted member of the household was possibly Rowland Laura’s son.]
I have not found the following Atcherleys on the 1939 Register:
● David Francis William Atcherley (likely on active service with the RAF and therefore not included in the register, although his twin brother Richard – who was probably on leave at the time – was included.)
● Mary Atcherley, widowed mother of Douglas (see above). Mary was living at 22 Buckley Street in Manchester in 1911, and the same address was given as her abode when she was buried in 1943, so she was most likely living there in 1939.
Some Atcherleys who could not be found when the 1939 Register was first released have since turned up and now appear in the abstracts above: Samuel and Mary Ann Atcherley in Pembrokeshire, Douglas Robert Atcherley in Lancashire, and my great grandmother Jessie Atcherley in Staffordshire.
