Note: I have not yet found any members of the Atcherley family overseas in the 1840s so, for now at least, this page consists solely of records from the 1841 census of England and Wales.

The information recorded on the 1841 census was very limited. It shows the names of each person in every household, but not the relationships between them. Ages for people older than 15 were often (but by no means always) rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Exact places of birth were not recorded: instead, the census shows whether or not people were born in the county in which they were living at the time, or (if they were born in a different country to the one in which they were living) gives their country of origin (England, Wales, Scotland or ‘Foreign Parts’).
Standard abbreviations used in the 1841 census included “ag lab” for agricultural labourer, “F S” and “M S” for female and male servants respectively, and “ind” for those of independent means.
