The Atcherleys descended from Roger of Shrewsbury were a diverse and fascinating lot. They included Royal Marines, merchants, clergymen, vets, artists, a bookkeeper, a doctor, an attorney, an engineer and a farmer who was also a singer!
Unless otherwise stated, all places named below are in Shropshire, England and those places outside Shropshire are in England or Wales.
Roger Atcherley. Born about 1689 and baptised 26 Aug 1690 at Shrewsbury. A tanner. Lived at Frankwell in Shrewsbury. Will dated 17 Sep 1755. Buried 16 Dec 1755 at Shrewsbury. ^Parents
Spouse: Ann Thomas. Probably born 1690s, possibly at Condover but no record of her baptism there. Married at Condover 10 May 1724 and buried there 13 Mar 1783. Children:

- Sarah Atcherley. Baptised 27 Nov 1726 at Shrewsbury. Buried there 25 Aug 1786.
- Mary Atcherley. Baptised 14 Oct 1728 at Shrewsbury. Married Joseph Gittoes there (he was baptised 11 Sep 1720 at Atcham) on 22 Dec 1750. Joseph, a Gentleman, made his will on 9 Feb 1786 and was buried 22 Apr 1789 at Condover. Mary was buried there 4 Mar 1793. The couple had seven children at Condover, 3 of whom (Mary, Anne and Martha) lived into adulthood and married.
- James Atcherley. Baptised 18 Nov 1730 at Shrewsbury. 2nd generation, family 2 >>
- Anne Atcherley. Baptised 3 Jan 1732/3 at Shrewsbury. Married George Matthews there 21 Feb 1757. The couple had a son, James Matthews, baptised 9 Jul 1758 at Cardeston, who became a clergyman and who, in his will of 6 Feb 1830, made bequests to some of the children and a nephew of the Rev James Atcherley. Anne was most likely the Mrs Ann Matthews, age given as 68, buried at Shrewsbury St Chad on 22 Oct 1802.
- Elizabeth Atcherley. Baptised 7 Apr 1735 at Shrewsbury. A resident of Frankwell, Shrewsbury at the time of her death, aged 82. Buried 27 Dec 1817 at Shrewsbury.
- Martha Atcherley. Born 12 Sep 1737 at Shrewsbury, and baptised there 27 Sep 1737. A resident of Frankwell, Shrewsbury at the time of her death, aged 59. Buried 3 Mar 1797 at Shrewsbury.
- Hannah Atcherley. Born 27 Jun 1739 at Shrewsbury, and baptised there 19 Jul 1739. Probably, like her sisters Elizabeth and Martha, a resident of Frankwell, Shrewsbury at the time of her death (aged 67). Buried 16 Mar 1807 at Shrewsbury.

Spouse: Mary Dart. Baptised 8 Mar 1723/4 at Bristol, Gloucestershire, daughter of Arthur Dart, a victualler, and his first wife Mary Check. Married there 24 Sep 1754, and buried there 2 May 1780. Will dated 1780. Children:

- Arthur Atcherley. Likely born about 1757 at Bristol, Gloucestershire. Buried there 3 Sep 1758.

James Atcherley. Baptised 18 Nov 1730 at Shrewsbury. Educated at Cambridge (B.A. 1753; M.A. 1763). Third Master at Shrewsbury School from 25 Nov 1755. Second Master from 29 Nov 1763. Head master from 25 Dec 1770 to 1798. Died 3 Mar 1804 at Bridgnorth, aged about 73, and buried there 6 Mar 1804. ^Parents
Spouse: Eleanor Griffiths. Baptised 11 Feb 1737 at Shrewsbury, daughter of John Griffiths, Esquire, a Burgess of Shrewsbury, and his wife Jane (Eleanor was also a great granddaughter of Roger Griffiths and his wife Mary Atcherley, sister of Thomas Atcherley of Marton in the parish of Myddle). Married at Shrewsbury 15 Dec 1766. Children:

- Eleanor Atcherley. Baptised 12 May 1769 at Shrewsbury. Married William Vickers, Esquire (baptised 11 Sep 1738 at Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales; record of marriage not found) and lived with him at Llanfawr in the parish of Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales. William made a will on 1 Apr 1818 and died 23 Feb 1823 aged about 84; he was buried at Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales on 27 Feb 1823. Eleanor died 5 Feb 1853 on Anglesey, Wales, and was buried at Holyhead on that island, her age given as 84. The couple had no children.
- John Atcherley. Baptised 1 Apr 1771 at Shrewsbury. Educated at Cambridge (B.A. 1793). Curate of Grinshill from 1794, signed the Stapleford parish registers from 1796 to 1798, a Navy Chaplain from 1798, succeeded his father as curate of Astley in 1804, curate of Wednesbury, Staffordshire 1805-6, and curate of Market Drayton from 1807. Died at Market Drayton, aged about 44, and was buried there 23 Mar 1816.
- Arabella Atcherley. Baptised 18 Jun 1771 at Shrewsbury. Married William Holt (baptised 4 Mar 1764 at Gloucester, Gloucestershire), a tea dealer, 2 May 1802 at Gloucester, Gloucestershire. William died 28 Jan 1822, age given as 58. Arabella died 11 Jan 1849 at Kingsholme, Gloucestershire. The couple had three children: Arabella Holt, Elizabeth Atcherley Holt (who married and became Elizabeth Atcherley Symes), and William James Holt.
- Dorothy Atcherley. Baptised 29 Jul 1774 at Shrewsbury, and buried there the following year on 17 May 1775.

- Mary Atcherley. Born about 1781, probably at Shrewsbury (no baptism record found). Married Lawrence Frost (baptised 20 Nov 1783 at Macclesfield, Cheshire), a timber merchant, on 15 Nov 1804 at Liverpool. Mary died 22 Nov 1846 at Liverpool, aged about 65. Lawrence died 2 Sep 1861 at Claughton, Birkenhead, Cheshire, aged 77, and was buried 6 Sep 1861 at Toxteth Park, Lancashire. The couple had eight children, all born at Liverpool.
- Ann Atcherley. Born about 1787, probably at Shrewsbury (no baptism record found). By Thomas Clarke, an agent, Ann had a son born out of wedlock named Alfred Valentine Clarke (on 13 Oct 1815 at Hampstead, Middlesex). Anne made her will on 10 Aug 1841 and was buried 29 Aug 1843 at Southwark, Surrey, aged 56.

Roger Atcherley. Baptised 23 Feb 1768 at Shrewsbury. Educated at Cambridge and Oxford. Curate of Lydbury North from 1791. A clerk, of St Andrew, Holborn, Middlesex at the time of his marriage in 1799. Curate of Sheinton 1817-24 and of Hughley 1818-21. Died 27 Aug 1821 at Much Wenlock and was buried there 30 Aug 1821. ^Parents
Spouse: Mary Rennell. Baptised 13 Oct 1770 at Dacca, Bengal, India, daughter of the geographer Captain (later Major) James Rennell, prior to his marriage to Jane Thackeray. Married 1 Dec 1799 at Holborn, Middlesex. Census: 1841 – Bridgnorth. Died at Bridgnorth aged about 71, and buried there 11 Feb 1842 (age given as 67). Children:

Emma died 10 Jul 1892 at Harrogate, Yorkshire, age given as 56. James then married Marian Lowe (born at Abberley in the parish of Kidderminster, Worcestershire, and baptised in that parish 1 Sep 1850, daughter of William Lowe and his wife Sarah) on 12 Dec 1893 at Didsbury, Lancashire. James died 10 Dec 1915 at Harrogate, Yorkshire, aged 82. Marian died 13 Jul 1944 at Edgbaston, Warwickshire, aged 93. James had no children by either of his wives.
- Mary Frances Atcherley. Born about 1836 at Bridgnorth. Census: 1841, 1851 – with parents; 1861 – Manchester. Married Alfred Over (born 1839 at Rugby, Warwickshire, and baptised there 17 Jan 1840), a veterinary surgeon, 25 Feb 1869 at Eccles, Lancashire, and lived with him in Rugby, Warwickshire. Alfred died 18 May 1922 in Warwickshire, aged 82. Mary died 28 Jul 1934 in Shropshire, aged 98. Both were buried at Rugby, Warwickshire. The couple did not have any children.
- Isabella Atcherley. Baptised 27 Jan 1841 at Bridgnorth. Census: 1841, 1851 – with parents; 1861, Manchester; 1871, 1881 – with mother; 1891 – Lytham, Lancashire; 1901 – Llandrillo, Carnarvonshire. Died about 1909 in Northamptonshire, aged 68.
- Lucy Atcherley. Born 1842 at Bridgnorth. Baptised there 7 Oct 1845. Census: 1851 – with parents; 1861 – Salford, Lancashire; 1871 – with mother. Married James Pugh (baptised 20 Jul 1845 at Sidbury), a fancy dry goods merchant, 13 Sep 1875 at Barton upon Irwell, Eccles, Lancashire. Lucy died 28 Jan 1927 in Shropshire, aged 84. James died there 14 Oct 1930, aged 85. The couple had three children, all born at Eccles, Lancashire: Bessie Atcherley Pugh, Tom Atcherley Pugh (a casualty of World War 1) and Rennell Atcherley Pugh.

Spouse: Martha Furmston. Born at Lee in the parish of Ellesmere (though in later life she gave St Martins as her birthplace), daughter of Thomas Furmston and wife Elizabeth. Baptised 6 Jan 1769 at Ellesmere. Married 20 Jan 1803 at Whitchurch. Census: 1841, 1851, 1861 – Whitchurch. Buried 14 Mar 1865 at Whitchurch, aged 96 (age in burial register 91). Children:

Married George Bradshaw (an innkeeper and watchmaker, born about 1798 at Whitchurch) on 20 Sep 1831 at Shrewsbury (George’s second wife; he had previously been married to Elizabeth Newnes, who was buried 15 Feb 1827 at Whitchurch). Elizabeth was buried 21 Aug 1858 at Whitchurch, age given as 55. George was buried there 11 Oct 1864, aged given as 68. The couple had nine children, including John Atcherley Bradshaw and James Atcherley Bradshaw (both of whom died in infancy).

Census: 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 – Whitchurch. Hannah was buried 29 Feb 1864 at Whitchurch, age given as 54, James was buried there 5 Jul 1871, age given as 63. The couple had no children.

John Wallace was actually James Weemys (or Wemyss) and it appears his marriage to Eleonora was bigamous. However on 12 May 1836 at Wells Next The Sea, Norfolk, James and Eleanora Atcherley married again. I have no record of the death of James, but the widowed Eleonora married Robert Meares (born about 1807 at Bristol, Gloucestershire) 15 Apr 1852 in London, Middlesex. Robert died 3 Jan 1875 at Chelsea, Middlesex, age given as 67.
- Ann Atcherley. Born 29 Aug 1813 at Southwark, Surrey and baptised there 26 Dec 1813. Married Henry Dennis (born 28 Oct 1808 at Clerkenwell, Middlesex), a cabinet maker, on 25 Dec 1838 at Newington, Surrey. Henry died some time after the 1871 census. Ann was probably the 68-year-old Ann Dennis whose death was registered in 1882 at Camberwell, Surrey. The couple had six children, and have living descendants.
