While John Atcherley’s older brother Samuel inherited the family farm at Moortown in High Ercall parish, it seems that John was left as the poor relation of the family. His children and their descendants had mixed fortunes. Some died as paupers, while others fared rather better. And while some stayed in Shropshire, others left the county, mostly settling in or close to Manchester in Lancashire.

Unless otherwise stated, all places named below are in Shropshire, England and those places outside Shropshire are in England or Wales.

1st generation

John Atcherley. Born at Westminster, Middlesex, 18 May 1766 and baptised there 6 Jun 1766. A labourer. Lived at Waters Upton. Buried 16 Oct 1819 at Ercall Magna. ^Parents

Spouse: Elizabeth Meadows. Born at Crudgington in the parish of Ercall Magna. Baptised at Waters Upton 1 May 1781 and at Ercall Magna 28 Oct 1781. Married at Wellington All Saints, 23 Nov 1807. Census: 1841 – Ercall Magna. Died 8 Jul 1849 at Eyton and buried 11 Jul 1849 at Wellington All Saints. Children:

Sarah Atcherley. Born at Waters Upton and baptised there 17 Jan 1809. A servant and dairy maid Census: 1841 – Childs Ercall; 1851 – Atcham; 1861 – Upton Magna; 1871 – Kinnersley. Died in Shropshire (probably at her last abode, the Union Workhouse in Wellington) and buried 19 Jun 1875 at Wellington All Saints.
John Atcherley. Born 5 Apr 1810. Baptised 29 Apr 1810 at Priors Lee in the parish of Shifnal. A tailor. Census: 1841 – Waters Upton; 1851, 1861, 1871 – not found. Died 21 Jul 1874 at the Union Workhouse, Wellington and buried 3 Aug 1874 at Wellington All Saints.
Mary Atcherley. Born at Waters Upton and baptised there 14 Jun 1812. Married William Brown (baptised 18 Sep 1808 at Llandinam, Montgomeryshire) at Waters Upton on 2 Jun 1833. Mary was buried 16 May 1860 at Wrockwardine Wood. The couple had four children, born at Waters Upton, Shifnal, Lilleshall and Wrockwardine.
Robert Atcherley. Born at Waters Upton and baptised there 30 Apr 1814. A labourer, and later in life a shop keeper. Married Emma Lawrence (baptised 20 Sep 1812 at Waters Upton) 1838 in Shropshire. Census: 1841 – Waters Upton; 1851 – Little Hales, Sheriff Hales; 1861, 1871, 1881 – Heath Hill, Sheriff Hales; 1891 – Sheriff Hales. Emma died 25 Nov 1888 and Robert died 1895, both probably died at home at Heath Hill, Sheriff Hales. Both were buried at Woodcote, Emma on 28 Nov 1888, Robert on 18 Apr 1895. The couple had no children.
Elizabeth Atcherley. Born at Waters Upton and baptised there 4 Oct 1818. Married Richard Ferrington (born at Ercall Magna and baptised 1 Feb 1818 at Waters Upton) 6 Sep 1840 at Wellington All Saints. Elizabeth was buried 16 Feb 1850 at Shawbury. The couple had five children at Acton Reynald in the parish of Shawbury. After Elizabeth’s death Richard married Elizabeth Clay. Richard died 1884 in Shropshire.

Thomas Atcherley. Born at Waters Upton about 1819. No baptism record found. A labourer, also a shepherd. Census: 1841, 1851 – not found; 1861 – Wrockwardine. Probably died at Eyton, where he was buried 17 Feb 1867. ^Parents

Spouse: Jane Hussey. Born 21 Apr 1825 at Shrewsbury and baptised there 8 May 1825. Married 4 May 1849 at Eyton. A laundress after husband Thomas died. Census: 1851 – not known; 1861 – with husband; 1871, 1881 – Tiddicross, Wrockwardine. Died 1886 in Shropshire and buried 21 May 1886 at Wrockwardine. Children:

Annie Atcherley. Born at Admaston in the parish of Wrockwardine. Baptised at Wrockwardine 23 Nov 1856. Census: 1861 – with parents; 1871 – with mother; 1881 – Wrockwardine. Probably died at home at Tiddicross. Buried 14 Jul 1881 at Wrockwardine.
Martha Atcherley. Born at Admaston in the parish of Wrockwardine. Baptised at Wrockwardine 10 Oct 1858. Census: 1861 – with parents; 1871, 1881 – with mother. Married Thomas Ellis (born about 1857 at Wellington) 6 Aug 1882 at Wrockwardine. Thomas died about 1887 in Shropshire. Martha was probably the Martha Ellis, age 70, whose death was registered at Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire in the third quarter of 1929. The couple had a son, Thomas Ellis, baptised 2 Sep 1883 at Wellington.
Mary Atcherley. Born at Admaston in the parish of Wrockwardine. Baptised at Wrockwardine 11 Mar 1860. A laundress, and later a domestic servant. Census: 1861 – with parents; 1871 – with mother; 1881 – Wrockwardine; 1891 – Tiddicross, Wrockwardine; 1901 – Overley, Wrockwardine; 1911 – Oldham, Lancashire. Died about 1915 in Lancashire.
Thomas Atcherley. Born at Admaston in the parish of Wrockwardine. Baptised at Wrockwardine 20 Jul 1862. A hotel waiter. Census: 1871 – with mother; 1881 – Failsworth, Lancashire; 1891 – Sheffield, Yorkshire. Died 1893 in Lancashire.

John Atcherley. Born at Wellington, and baptised there 21 Apr 1850. A railway stock/traffic inspector. Census: 1861 – with parents; 1871 – not known; 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911 – Failsworth, Lancashire. Died 1934 in Devon. ^Parents

Spouse: Elizabeth Price (a.k.a. Elizabeth Minshall). Born about May 1851 at Harmer Hill in the parish of Middle. Baptised there (as Elizabeth Price, daughter of Alice Price) 14 Sep 1851. Took the surname of her stepfather, Richard Minshall, who married Alice on 26 Oct 1854 at Shrewsbury. Elizabeth Minshall married John Atcherley 1876 in Shropshire. Census: 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911 – with husband. Died 1920 in Devon. Children:

Rose Atcherley. Born 1877 at Pendleton, Lancashire. Census: 1881, 1891 – with parents. Married Walter Mills (born about 1873 at Manchester, Lancashire) 1900 at Failsworth, Lancashire. The couple had two sons at Oldham, named Harold and Jack.
Annie Atcherley. Born at Pendleton, Lancashire, baptised there 14 Nov 1879, and died before the end of that year.
Frank Atcherley. Born at Failsworth, Lancashire and baptised there 16 Oct 1881. 4th generation, family 1 >>
Florrie Atcherley. Born 23 Mar 1886 at Failsworth, Lancashire. Baptised 6 Jun 1886 at Manchester, Lancashire. Census: 1881, 1891 – with parents. Married Harold Austin Unsworth (born 1884 at Oldham, Lancashire) 23 Feb 1909 at Failsworth, Lancashire. Harold died 1 Jul 1950 in Devon, and Florrie died there in 1967. The couple had a daughter, Marjorie Unsworth, born 20 Jun 1910 (according to her father’s World War 1 records) at Oldham.
Ada Atcherley. Born 1891 at Failsworth, Lancashire. Census: 1891, 1901 – with parents. Married Alfred Sylvester (born 24 May 1886 at Oldham, Lancashire) 14 Apr 1915 at Exmouth, Devon. Ada died 1968 in Devon and Alfred died there in 1977. The couple had no children.

Robert Atcherley. Born at Wellington, and baptised there 12 Oct 1851. A groom / ostler / horse keeper and later a car cleaner for Manchester Corporation tramways. Census: 1861 – with parents; 1871 – Marchamley; 1881 – Wellington; 1891 – Shrewsbury; 1901, 1911 – Manchester, Lancashire. Died in Manchester, Lancashire and was buried there 2 Feb 1933. ^Parents

Spouse: Mary Reynolds. Baptised 30 Aug 1857 at Donington, daughter of Ann Reynolds. Married 1883 in Shropshire. Census: 1891, 1901, 1911 – with husband. Died 1943 in Lancashire. Died in Manchester, Lancashire and was buried there 10 Jun 1943. Children:

Maud Atcherley. Born 12 Jun 1888 at Albrighton in the parish of Pimhill. Census: 1891, 1901, 1911 – with parents. Married Thomas Nulty 1917 at Prestwich, Lancashire. The couple had a son, named after his father. Thomas Nulty senior died 1936 in Lancashire, aged 46. Maud then married Francis Joseph Duggan (born 1899 in Yorkshire) 1940 at Manchester, Lancashire. Francis died 1974 in Lancashire, and Maud died there in 1969.
Joseph Atcherley. Born at Shrewsbury and baptised at Shrewsbury All Saints 7 May 1893. Census: 1901 – with parents. Probably died at Newton Heath, Manchester, Lancashire, where he was buried 26 Mar 1909, aged 15.

Sarah Atcherley. Born at Admaston in the parish of Wrockwardine. Baptised at Wrockwardine 26 Mar 1854. Census: 1861 – with parents; 1871 – Eaton upon Tern, Stoke Upon Tern; 1881 – Llanafan, Cardiganshire. No death / burial record found. ^Parents

Arthur Atcherley (a.k.a. Arthur Burgess). Born 30 Jan 1874 at Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire and baptised there 22 Feb 1874. Adopted by Thomas and Susan Burgess. Census: 1881 – Shrewsbury. As Arthur Burgess he married and had four daughters. Died about 1952 in Shropshire.

Albert Atcherley. Born 29 Jul 1876 at Camberwell, Surrey, and died there, less than one year old, about 1877.

Spouse 3: David Parry. Born about 1853 at Llanfihangel, Cardiganshire. A groom, and coachman. Married 1 Mar 1882 at Llanafan, Cardiganshire. Died 15 May 1904 at Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire. David and Sarah had three children: David and Thomas Parry born at Crosswood, Llanafan, Cardiganshire and Henry Morgan Parry born at Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire.

Samuel Atcherley. Born at Admaston in the parish of Wrockwardine. Baptised at Wrockwardine 4 Dec 1864. A designer of calico prints. Census: 1871, 1881 – with mother; 1891 – not known; 1901, 1911 – Altrincham, Cheshire. Died in Cheshire (possibly at home, in Altrincham) and was buried 11 Jan 1940 in Manchester. ^Parents

Spouse: Olive Gidman. Born at Knutsford, Cheshire and baptised there 30 Mar 1873. Married 14 Jun 1900 at Altrincham, Cheshire. Census: 1901, 1911 – with husband. Died 27 Jan 1945 at Manchester, Lancashire and buried there 31 Jan 1945. Daughter:

Vera Mary Atcherley. Born 12 Mar 1903 at Altrincham, Cheshire and baptised there 15 Apr 1903. Census: 1911 – with parents. Married Geoffrey Dixon Walmsley (born 1904 at Manchester, Lancashire) 1933 at Manchester, Lancashire. Geoffrey died 6 May 1951 at Manchester, Lancashire. Vera died 26 Dec 1990 in Cheshire.
